Plains History Article: “The Four Sacred Oaks”
Plains History ArticlePart of a class project for HIST 292: Native American History in Spring 2025 at the University of St. Thomas with community research support from the Mendota Mdewakanton Dakota Tribal Community.
Forming a diamond shape, four towering, bur oak trees, believed to be the site of a vision quest ritual, mark a spot just west of the Mississippi River. Though cut down in 1999 to make way for the reroute of Highway 55, saplings of the trees have been replanted and continue to hold sacred importance to the Mendota Mdewakanton Dakota Tribal Community.
